How can WIP stock and costs be tracked accurately during different production stages in ERPNext?

Tracking Work-in-Progress (WIP) in a manufacturing process is important to understand the status of partially completed products, monitor production efficiency, and maintain accurate inventory and costing.

In ERPNext, WIP tracking can be managed effectively using the Manufacturing module. The system provides several tools that help monitor materials, production stages, and costs during the manufacturing lifecycle.

Here are the main ways ERPNext tracks WIP:

      1. Work Orders
Work Orders define the production process for a specific item. Once a Work Order is created, ERPNext tracks raw material consumption, production quantities, and the progress of manufacturing operations.

      2. Stock Entry for WIP
When production starts, materials are transferred from the Raw Material Warehouse to a Work-in-Progress (WIP) warehouse using a Stock Entry. This helps track materials currently being used in production.

      3. Job Cards for Operations
If the manufacturing process involves multiple operations, ERPNext allows the creation of Job Cards. These track individual tasks, employee activities, and the progress of each production step.

      4. WIP Warehouse Management
ERPNext uses a dedicated WIP Warehouse where semi-finished goods and consumed materials are recorded during the production process.

      5. Production Completion
Once manufacturing is completed, the finished goods are moved from the WIP warehouse to the Finished Goods warehouse through a “Manufacture” Stock Entry.

This workflow ensures complete visibility of materials, operations, and costs during the production process.

Overall, ERPNext provides a structured approach to WIP tracking by integrating Work Orders, Job Cards, Stock Entries, and warehouse management, making it easier for manufacturers to monitor production and maintain accurate inventory records.
