Posting Date and Value Date in Lending

In Frappe Lending Version 16, the Posting Date and Value Date concept separates accounting entry dates from actual business transaction dates. This allows lenders to maintain accurate loan processing while keeping accounting records stable.

Posting Date represents the date when an accounting entry is recorded in the ledger, whereas Value Date represents the actual date on which the loan-related transaction occurred and is used for business calculations.

This separation supports immutable accounting practices while allowing users to process backdated loan transactions without modifying previously closed accounting periods.

Did You Know?

Value Date ensures loan calculations use the actual transaction date, while Posting Date keeps accounting entries aligned with the current ledger period.

How Posting Date and Value Date Work

Frappe Lending uses two separate dates for various loan transactions:

Date Type Description
Posting Date The date on which the accounting entry is posted to the general ledger. In normal usage, this remains the current date to prevent changes in closed accounting periods.
Value Date The actual transaction date used by Frappe Lending for loan calculations, interest calculations, and business processing.

Why Separate Posting Date and Value Date?

The separation allows users to record transactions that occurred earlier while maintaining accounting consistency.

For example, if a borrower repayment was received earlier but entered into the system later:

  • The Value Date represents the actual repayment date.
  • The Posting Date records the accounting entry in the current accounting period.

This ensures accurate loan calculations without rewriting historical accounting records.

Transactions Using Posting Date and Value Date

The Posting Date and Value Date approach is used for multiple lending transactions, including:

  • Loan Repayment
  • Loan Write Off
  • Loan Refund
  • Loan Disbursement
  • Loan Interest Accrual
  • Loan Demand
  • Related accounting entries

Backdated Transaction Handling

Frappe Lending allows users to enter backdated loan transactions while maintaining accounting integrity.

Scenario Date Handling
Backdated Repayment Loan calculations use the actual repayment date, while accounting is posted based on the Posting Date.
Backdated Write Off The transaction uses the Value Date for loan processing while maintaining stable accounting records.
Backdated Refund The refund date can be recorded correctly without changing closed ledger periods.

Loan Disbursement Date

For Loan Disbursement, the disbursement date should be used as the relevant transaction date for loan processing.

The Value Date should represent the actual date when the loan amount was disbursed.

Note

Posting Date and Value Date should be maintained correctly to ensure accurate loan calculations and reliable accounting records.

Best Practices

  • Use the actual transaction date as the Value Date.
  • Avoid changing Posting Dates into closed accounting periods.
  • Verify Value Dates for backdated loan transactions.
  • Use the actual disbursement date for Loan Disbursement transactions.
