Suspense Accounting in Lending

Suspense Accounting in lending is the process of temporarily recording interest income, penalties, or charges in a suspense account when their collection becomes uncertain. Instead of recognizing such amounts as regular income, the lender holds them separately until the payment is received or the uncertainty is resolved.

Frappe Lending provides automated suspense accounting for NPA (Non-Performing Asset) loans, allowing lenders to manage uncertain interest income and charges through configured suspense accounts.

Did You Know?

Suspense accounting prevents uncertain interest and charges from being recognized as income until they are actually collected.

Configuring Suspense Accounts

Before using suspense accounting, users need to configure the required suspense accounts in the respective Loan Product.

The configured accounts are used for automatically transferring uncertain interest, penalties, and charges when a loan becomes NPA.

Configuration Description
Interest Suspense Account Used to temporarily hold interest amounts that are no longer recognized as regular income.
Penalty Suspense Account Used for penalty amounts transferred from income accounts when applicable.
Charge Suspense Account Used to hold other loan-related charges when collection becomes uncertain.

Automatic Suspense Accounting for NPA Loans

Once suspense accounts are configured, Frappe Lending automatically processes suspense accounting when a loan is classified as NPA.

When the loan becomes NPA:

  1. The system identifies outstanding interest, penalty, and charge amounts.
  2. A Journal Entry is automatically created.
  3. The amount is transferred from the regular income account to the configured suspense account.

Note

Suspense accounting applies to applicable NPA loan amounts based on the accounts configured in the Loan Product.

Accounting Flow

Event Accounting Treatment
Loan Becomes NPA Outstanding interest, penalties, and charges are moved from regular income accounts to suspense accounts through a Journal Entry.
Payment Received The collected amount is transferred back from the suspense account to the regular income account.

Payment and Income Recognition

When the borrower makes a payment against the suspended amount, Frappe Lending reverses the suspense treatment.

The collected amount is moved back to the regular income account, allowing the lender to recognize the received income appropriately.
