Move a Site to a Different Server

The Change Server option has been integrated into the Site Migration feature. You can now move your site to another server using the unified migration workflow available from the Migrations tab.

Note

The standalone Change Server action has been replaced by the Site Migration feature. Use the migration workflow to move your site between servers.

Move a Site to Another Server

  1. Open your Site Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the Migrations tab.
  3. Click Trigger Migration.
  4. Select Move Site to Different Server / Bench as the migration type.
  5. Select the destination server or choose to create a new bench if required.
  6. Review the migration configuration.
  7. Confirm the migration to begin the process.

Moving from a Public Bench to a Dedicated Server

If your site is currently hosted on a Public Bench, it must first be moved to a Private Bench before it can be migrated to a dedicated server.

  1. Move the site to a private bench using the Site Migration feature.
  2. After the site is running on a private bench, initiate another migration and select your dedicated server as the destination.

Server Requirements

The destination server must belong to your team and be available for the selected bench. If the required bench does not exist on the destination server, Frappe Cloud can provision or deploy a compatible bench during the migration process, depending on the selected migration option.

Migration Completion

Once the migration completes successfully, your site will begin running from the selected server while retaining its existing configuration and data.

Additional Storage During Migration

During a site migration, backup files are extracted before restoration. Since compressed backup files expand significantly when uncompressed, the server may temporarily require substantially more storage than the original backup size.

If sufficient storage is not available, the migration may fail. In such cases, increase the server’s available storage before retrying the migration.

Important

Ensure the destination server has enough free storage to accommodate the temporary expansion of backup files during restoration. Consider adding storage before starting the migration if your site contains a large database or file attachments.

Best Practice

Schedule server migrations during maintenance windows and verify that the destination server has sufficient compute resources and storage capacity. This helps minimize downtime and ensures a smooth migration experience.
