Shift Management in Frappe HR: An Overview
The Shift Management module in Frappe HR helps you manage your employees’ shifts efficiently defining the shifts you run, assigning them to people, letting employees request shift changes, and feeding it all into attendance. It is the backbone for any organization that doesn’t run a single fixed nine-to-five.
This page is the overview; each part has its own detailed guide.
What you can do with Shift Management
The module brings together several pieces that work as one flow:
- Set up a Shift Type: define a shift’s timings, grace periods, and Auto Attendance rules.
- Create Shift Requests: let employees request a particular shift, with approval.
- View and manage Shift Assignments: assign shifts to employees on specific dates and see who is on what.
- Set the Attendance Device ID: on the Employee master so check-ins from biometric devices map to the right person.
- Create Employee Checkins: capture each person’s IN/OUT logs.
- Let Auto Attendance run: with it enabled, the system processes those check-ins against the shift and marks attendance automatically.
TIP
Work through these in order. The Shift Type is the foundation, once it’s defined and assigned, check-ins and Auto Attendance fall into place. Trying to mark shift-based attendance before the Shift Type exists is the usual reason things don’t add up.
How the pieces fit together
In short: a Shift Type defines the shift, a Shift Assignment (or a Shift Request that becomes one) puts an employee on it, Employee Checkins record when they actually arrive and leave, and Auto Attendance ties the two together to produce the attendance record. Beyond the basics, the module also offers Shift Locations, Shift Schedules and Schedule Assignments, the Shift Assignment Tool for bulk work, and a Roster view for seeing everyone’s shifts at a glance.

SUMMARY
Shift Management lets you run employee shifts end to end: set up a Shift Type, assign it (directly or via Shift Requests), set Attendance Device IDs, capture Employee Checkins, and let Auto Attendance mark attendance. Start with the Shift Type, then build outward to assignments, check-ins, and the supporting tools Shift Locations, Schedules, the Shift Assignment Tool, and the Roster view.
