Designation in Frappe HR: Job Titles and Required Skills

A Designation is the official job title given to an employee, Director, Manager, Software Developer, Accountant, and so on. Every organisation runs on a mix of roles, from the people setting direction to the people delivering the work, and the Designation master is where you define each of those titles once and reuse them across your employee records.

In Frappe HR, a Designation is not just a label: you can also record a description and the skills the role requires, which connect into performance evaluation later.

You will find it under Home > Human Resources > Employee > Designation.

How to create a Designation

  1. Go to the Designation list and click New.
  2. Enter the Designation name.
  3. Optionally, add a Description and the Required Skills for the role.
  4. Save.

Once saved, the designation becomes available to select on the Employee master, so each person can be tagged with their correct job title.

Required Skills and the Skill Map

The Required Skills you list on a Designation are more than documentation. They flow directly into the Employee Skill Map, where an employee can be evaluated against the skills expected for their role. In other words, defining skills here once means you do not have to re-enter them for every appraisal they are pulled in automatically based on the employee’s designation.

NOTE

The skills specified in the Required Skills section of a Designation can be fetched directly into the Employee Skill Map, so an employee’s performance can be assessed against the skills their role actually demands.

TIP

Take a few minutes to fill in Required Skills when you create each designation, even though it is optional. It costs little up front and saves real effort later appraisals and skill-gap reviews become far quicker when the expected skills are already attached to the role.
