Appraisal Cycle in Frappe HR: Running Performance Review Cycles

An Appraisal Cycle defines a performance review round for a period, an annual review, a quarterly check-in, and so on. It brings together the employees to be appraised, the appraisal template that scores them, and the date range, then generates an Appraisal for each person so the whole review runs as one coordinated cycle rather than a scatter of individual forms.

You will find it under Home > Human Resources > Performance > Appraisal Cycle.

BEFORE YOU START

Create your Appraisal Template first (the KRAs and rating criteria to score against), and make sure the Employees you’ll appraise exist.

How to create an Appraisal Cycle

  1. Open the Appraisal Cycle list and click New.
  2. Enter the Appraisal Cycle Name (e.g. “Annual Review 2025”) and select the Company.
  3. Set the Start Date and End Date for the cycle.
  4. Choose the Appraisal Template to apply.
  5. Add the employees to be appraised in the Appraisees table, you can pull them in with Get Employees, filtered by department, designation, or branch.
  6. Save.

Generating the appraisals

With the cycle saved, use Create Appraisals to generate an Appraisal document for every employee in the cycle, each based on the chosen template. From there the cycle typically moves through its stages setting KRAs and goals, self-appraisal by the employee, and feedback from managers all tracked against the one cycle.

NOTE

The cycle is the container for a review round, it creates and tracks all the individual Appraisals together, so you can see progress across everyone at a glance rather than chasing forms one by one.

TIP

Use Get Employees with filters to build each cycle quickly, for example, run one cycle per department with its own template. It keeps large review rounds organised and lets different teams be scored on what’s relevant to them.

SUMMARY

An Appraisal Cycle runs a performance review for a period by grouping the employees, the appraisal template, and the date range together. Create your template and employees first, then make a cycle with a name, company, dates, and template, and add appraisees (using Get Employees with filters). Use Create Appraisals to generate an Appraisal per employee, after which the cycle tracks KRAs, self-appraisal, and feedback for everyone in one place.
