Organizational Chart in Frappe HR: Visualising Your Reporting Hierarchy

An Organizational Chart shows your company’s structure by mapping the connections between employees, complete with each person’s name, photo, and designation. In a large organisation where it is hard to keep track of who’s who, the chart lets people explore the hierarchy by faces and roles rather than trying to remember names.

You will find it under Home > Human Resources > Employee > Organizational Chart.

How the chart is built

The best part is that you do not draw it. The chart is generated automatically from the “Reports To” field on each Employee record. Keep that field filled in, and the hierarchy maintains itself, no separate diagram to update every time someone joins, moves, or leaves.

Employees who do not report to anyone (typically founders or top management) appear at the first level, and everyone else branches out beneath the person they report to.

What each node shows

Every node on the chart displays:

  • The Employee Name
  • The employee’s Image
  • Their Designation
  • The total number of connections, that is, the count of all descendants reporting up to that person, all the way down the hierarchy

Each node also has an edit button that takes you straight to that person’s Employee master.

Navigating the chart

The chart adapts to your screen: it expands horizontally on desktop and vertically on mobile. As you click through it, the active reporting line stays highlighted, so you can always see the path you are exploring. If you run more than one company, use the Company filter to view the org chart for each one separately.

TIP

Because the whole chart depends on the “Reports To” field, make filling it in part of your onboarding routine. If a new hire’s manager is left blank, that person will float at the top level of the chart instead of appearing under their actual manager.

SUMMARY

The Organizational Chart is an automatic, interactive view of your reporting hierarchy, built from the “Reports To” field on each Employee record. People with no manager sit at the top level, and each node shows the employee’s name, image, designation, and number of connections, with an edit link to their record. The chart expands horizontally on desktop and vertically on mobile, highlights the active line as you navigate, and can be filtered by company. Keep “Reports To” accurate and the chart stays accurate on its own.
