Request for Raw Materials from Sales Order
ERPNext allows you to generate a Material Request directly from a Sales Order for the raw materials required to manufacture finished goods. This simplifies procurement planning for individual orders without creating a complete Production Plan.
While the Production Plan is designed to plan manufacturing across multiple Sales Orders, there are situations where only a single Sales Order needs production planning. In such cases, ERPNext provides the option to create a Material Request directly from the Sales Order.
1. Prerequisites
Before requesting raw materials, ensure the following are available:
- A submitted Sales Order
- Finished Goods with a valid Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Required Raw Materials defined in the BOM
2. How to Create a Material Request from a Sales Order
- Open the submitted Sales Order.
- Click the Make button.
- Select Request for Raw Materials.
- A dialog box will display all finished items that have an associated BOM.
- Select or change the BOM if multiple BOMs are available.
- Configure the required planning options.
- Click Make to generate the Material Request.
3. Available Planning Options
Include Exploded Items
Enable this option to generate Material Requests for the raw materials of exploded BOM components. This is useful when the BOM contains sub-assemblies and you want to procure all underlying raw materials instead of the intermediate assemblies.
Ignore Existing Ordered Quantity
Enable this option if you want ERPNext to create a Material Request regardless of whether sufficient quantities have already been ordered.
If this option is disabled, ERPNext considers existing ordered quantities and requests only the remaining required materials.
4. Material Request Generation
Once the request is created, ERPNext automatically prepares a Material Request containing all raw materials required to manufacture the finished goods specified in the Sales Order.
The generated Material Request can then be processed through the standard procurement workflow, including:
- Purchase Request
- Request for Quotation (RFQ)
- Purchase Order
- Purchase Receipt
5. Benefits
- Eliminates the need to create a Production Plan for individual Sales Orders.
- Automatically calculates required raw materials from the BOM.
- Reduces manual procurement planning.
- Supports manufacturing directly from customer demand.
- Improves procurement accuracy and planning efficiency.
SUMMARY
ERPNext enables users to generate a Material Request directly from a submitted Sales Order for manufacturing raw materials. By referencing the item’s BOM, the system automatically determines the required materials and creates a procurement request, making it an efficient solution for production planning of individual customer orders.
