Material Consumption in Work Order (Multiple Stock Entries)
The Material Consumption feature in manufacturing allows multiple Stock Entry transactions against a single Work Order. This provides flexibility in production environments where raw materials are consumed in multiple stages instead of a single backflush operation.
This functionality is controlled through Manufacturing Settings and becomes available only after enabling the required configuration.
Enabling Material Consumption
To activate multiple material consumption entries, navigate to:
Manufacturing → Manufacturing Settings
Enable the option Allow Multiple Material Consumption in the settings. Once enabled, the system allows controlled and staged material usage against a Work Order.
After enabling this setting, a Material Consumption button becomes available inside an active Work Order.
Creating Material Consumption Entry
When the Material Consumption button is clicked, the system automatically creates a Stock Entry with the purpose:
Material Consumption for Manufacture
This Stock Entry is used to record the actual consumption of raw materials during production execution.
Backflush Behavior Based on Settings
The system determines how much material should be proposed for consumption based on the Backflush Raw Materials Based On setting in Manufacturing Settings.
1. Backflush Based on BOM
If set to BOM, the system proposes consumption of the full required quantity defined in the Bill of Materials.
This approach assumes full material requirement alignment with production planning.
2. Backflush Based on Material Transferred for Manufacture
If set to Material Transferred for Manufacture, the system proposes consumption only for the quantity that has been transferred to the Work Order.
This ensures consumption is limited to physically available materials at the production stage.
Work Order Consumption Tracking
Once a Material Consumption Stock Entry is submitted, the system updates the Consumed Qty column in the Work Order.
Each submitted Material Consumption entry is recorded and reflected in real-time in the Work Order’s consumed quantity tracking.
For subsequent Material Consumption entries, the system automatically suggests only the remaining unconsumed quantity.
Work Order Completion Logic
When the Finish button is clicked on the Work Order, the system considers the total consumed quantity across all Material Consumption entries.
This ensures that final production completion is accurately aligned with actual material usage rather than planned estimates alone.
Validations and Restrictions
1. Setting Dependency Validation
If Allow Multiple Material Consumption is not enabled in Manufacturing Settings, the system restricts the use of Material Consumption for Manufacture Stock Entry.
This prevents unauthorized or inconsistent material consumption entries in the production flow.
2. Cancellation Restriction
A Material Consumption for Manufacture Stock Entry cannot be cancelled once the associated Work Order has been completed.
This ensures data integrity and prevents retrospective changes to finalized production records.
Key Summary
Material Consumption functionality enables controlled, multi-stage raw material usage in manufacturing. By allowing multiple Stock Entries against a Work Order and tracking consumed quantities dynamically, it ensures accurate production monitoring, better material control, and improved alignment between planned and actual consumption.
