Workstation Type

A Workstation Type in ERPNext is used to group multiple workstations that perform the same manufacturing operation. It enables the system to automatically assign production jobs to an available workstation of the specified type, eliminating the need for users to manually select a workstation each time a Work Order is created.

This feature is especially beneficial for manufacturers who have multiple machines with similar capabilities. Instead of assigning each operation to a specific workstation, users can assign a Workstation Type, allowing ERPNext to dynamically allocate available resources during production.

What is a Workstation Type?

A Workstation Type represents a category of workstations that perform the same function in the manufacturing process.

For example, if a factory has several CNC Machines or Welding Stations that can perform identical operations, they can all be grouped under a single Workstation Type. When production begins, ERPNext automatically selects one of the available workstations belonging to that type.

This improves production planning, resource utilization, and scheduling efficiency.

Creating a Workstation Type

To create a Workstation Type:

  1. Navigate to the Workstation Type list.
  2. Click New.
  3. Enter a unique name for the Workstation Type.
  4. Save the document.

Once created, the Workstation Type can be assigned to multiple Workstations and used within manufacturing documents.

Assigning a Workstation Type to a Workstation

After creating the Workstation Type, it must be assigned to the relevant Workstations.

  • Open the required Workstation.
  • Select the appropriate Workstation Type.
  • Save the Workstation.

Multiple Workstations can be linked to the same Workstation Type, allowing them to function as interchangeable production resources.

Using Workstation Type in a BOM

Workstation Types can be assigned directly to manufacturing operations within a Bill of Materials (BOM) or a Routing.

Instead of selecting a specific workstation, users simply specify the appropriate Workstation Type for each manufacturing operation.

This approach provides greater flexibility because ERPNext determines the actual workstation during production based on resource availability.

Automatic Workstation Assignment

When a Work Order containing operations is created, ERPNext automatically generates the required Job Cards.

During Job Card creation, the system performs the following actions:

  • Identifies the Workstation Type assigned to each operation.
  • Checks the available Workstations belonging to that Workstation Type.
  • Automatically assigns an available Workstation to the Job Card.

This automatic assignment reduces manual intervention and helps distribute production work efficiently across similar machines.

System Behavior

When a Work Order is created with operations, ERPNext automatically generates Job Cards and assigns an available Workstation based on the Workstation Type specified in the Bill of Materials (BOM) or Routing.
