Production Planning Report
Production Planning Report helps manufacturers determine whether they have sufficient finished goods and raw materials to fulfill production demand. The report analyzes requirements from Sales Orders, Work Orders, or Material Requests (with the request type set to Manufactured) and compares them with the available inventory to support efficient production planning.
It is especially useful for Make-to-Order (MTO) manufacturing, where production begins only after receiving customer orders. By highlighting material shortages and automatically allocating available inventory, the report helps manufacturers prioritize production and procurement activities.
Accessing the Production Planning Report
The report is available from:
Home → Manufacturing → Reports → Production Planning Report
How the Report Works
The Production Planning Report evaluates manufacturing requirements using data from:
- Sales Orders
- Work Orders
- Material Requests (Request Type: Manufactured)
Based on these documents, ERPNext compares the required finished goods and raw materials with the available inventory in the selected warehouse.
The report provides visibility into:
- Available finished goods.
- Available raw materials.
- Production requirements.
- Inventory shortages.
Inventory Availability
The report highlights inventory availability for both finished goods and raw materials.
- Available items can be allocated immediately for production or order fulfillment.
- Unavailable items are highlighted in red, allowing users to quickly identify shortages that require manufacturing or procurement.
This enables production planners to make informed decisions before releasing Work Orders or Purchase Orders.
Automatic Stock Allocation
The Production Planning Report automatically allocates available inventory to production orders based on the selected sorting criteria.
This ensures that existing stock is assigned to the highest-priority orders first, reducing delays and improving inventory utilization.
Order By Filter
The Order By filter determines the sequence in which available inventory is allocated.
Users can prioritize orders based on:
- Delivery Date
- Order Amount
This flexibility allows organizations to align production planning with business priorities.
Make-to-Order Planning
The report is particularly valuable for organizations following a Make-to-Order (MTO) manufacturing process.
By comparing customer demand with current inventory, production planners can:
- Identify which customer orders can be fulfilled immediately.
- Determine which products require manufacturing.
- Identify raw materials that need to be purchased.
- Prioritize production based on delivery commitments.
This helps ensure that manufacturing resources are allocated efficiently while minimizing delivery delays.
System Behavior
As inventory becomes available in the selected warehouse, ERPNext automatically allocates the stock to production orders according to the selected Order By criteria, ensuring high-priority orders are fulfilled first.
Business Benefits
- Plans production using Sales Orders, Work Orders, and Material Requests.
- Compares production demand with available inventory.
- Highlights finished goods and raw material shortages.
