Instead of creating individual BOMs for every sub-assembly before creating the final product BOM, users can define the entire product structure in one place using a tree-based view.

Why Use the BOM Creator?
In the standard BOM creation process, every sub-assembly must be created separately before it can be included in the BOM of the finished product. For products with multiple levels of sub-assemblies, this often requires switching between several BOM records, making the process time-consuming and difficult to manage.
The BOM Creator eliminates this complexity by providing a single workspace where users can build the complete product hierarchy from top to bottom.

System Behavior
The BOM Creator generates all required Bills of Materials only after the document is submitted. ERPNext processes the BOM creation in the background, automatically creating BOMs for the finished product and every defined sub-assembly.
Creating a BOM Using the BOM Creator
The BOM Creator provides a guided approach for building multi-level product structures.
- Create a new BOM Creator record.
- Select the Finished Product that will be manufactured.
- Save the document.
After saving, ERPNext displays the product hierarchy where users can begin defining the manufacturing structure.
Adding Components
Within the BOM Creator, users can add both raw materials and sub-assembly items directly into the product tree.
The tree structure allows users to organize components according to the manufacturing hierarchy, making it easier to understand how the finished product is assembled.
Users can continue expanding the hierarchy by adding additional levels of sub-assemblies whenever required.
Converting Raw Materials into Sub-Assemblies
During BOM creation, it may become necessary to convert an existing raw material into a manufactured sub-assembly.
To do this:
- Select the required raw material in the tree.
- Click the Convert to Sub-Assembly button.
ERPNext converts the selected raw material into a sub-assembly, allowing users to further define its own child components within the same BOM Creator.
This makes it easy to restructure the manufacturing hierarchy without recreating the BOM from scratch.
Updating Quantities
Users can modify the quantity of any component while building the BOM.
The quantities defined for raw materials and sub-assemblies become part of the generated Bills of Materials when the BOM Creator is submitted.
Generating Bills of Materials
Once the complete product hierarchy has been created, the BOM Creator must be submitted.
Upon submission, ERPNext automatically:
- Generates the BOM for the finished product.
- Creates BOMs for every defined sub-assembly.
- Maintains the relationships between all levels of the manufacturing structure.
To ensure a smooth user experience, the BOM generation process is executed as a background job, allowing users to continue working while ERPNext creates the required BOM records.
Operational Note
The BOM Creator does not create individual BOMs while users are building the product hierarchy. All BOM records are generated automatically only after the BOM Creator is submitted.
