Brand

A Brand identifies products that are marketed or sold under a specific name. Assigning Brands to Items in ERPNext helps organize products and automatically apply predefined purchasing and selling defaults.

A Brand is commonly the manufacturer or company under which a product is sold. However, the Brand and the actual manufacturer are not always the same. For example, a manufacturer may produce products that are sold under another company’s brand name.

For example, Apple is a brand that sells laptops and smartphones, while many of its products are manufactured by third-party manufacturers.

Example

  • A factory manufactures plastic cups.
  • The cups are sold under the brand name EcoWare.
  • The manufacturer and the Brand are different, but customers recognize the product by its Brand.

1. Creating a Brand

To create a Brand in ERPNext:

  1. Open the Brand list.
  2. Click New.
  3. Enter the Brand Name.
  4. Optionally enter a description.
  5. Click Save.

Once created, the Brand can be assigned to any Item from the Item master.

Note
Assigning a Brand to an Item helps ERPNext automatically fetch predefined defaults during purchase and sales transactions.

2. Brand Defaults

ERPNext allows you to configure default values at the Brand level. Whenever an Item belonging to that Brand is selected in a transaction, these defaults are applied automatically.

Available defaults include:

  • Default Warehouse – Warehouse used for storing or issuing Items.
  • Default Price List – Buying or selling price list associated with the Brand.

Purchase Defaults

For purchasing transactions such as Purchase Orders, Purchase Receipts, and Purchase Invoices, you can configure:

  • Default Buying Cost Center
  • Default Supplier
  • Default Expense Account

Sales Defaults

For sales transactions such as Sales Orders, Delivery Notes, and Sales Invoices, you can configure:

  • Default Selling Cost Center
  • Default Income Account

Example

  • Brand: Apple
  • Default Warehouse: Electronics Warehouse
  • Default Supplier: Apple Distributor
  • Default Income Account: Electronics Sales

Whenever an Apple product is selected in a purchase or sales transaction, ERPNext automatically fills these values, reducing manual data entry.

3. Benefits of Using Brands

  • Organizes products by brand name.
  • Automatically applies purchase and sales defaults.
  • Reduces repetitive data entry.
  • Improves consistency across transactions.
  • Simplifies reporting and product analysis by Brand.

Summary

Brands in ERPNext help classify Items under a common product name while allowing organizations to define default warehouses, suppliers, accounts, and price lists. This simplifies purchasing and sales processes, ensures consistency across transactions, and makes product management more organized.
