Scrap Management in Manufacturing
Scrap refers to waste materials generated during the manufacturing process that either have no economic value or retain only the value of their recoverable material through recycling. These materials are typically produced as a by-product of manufacturing or consist of damaged, expired, or unusable items that can no longer be used in production.
ERPNext enables manufacturers to record and account for scrap generated during production. The system tracks scrap quantities defined in the Bill of Materials (BOM) and automatically records them in the designated scrap warehouse when the manufacturing process is completed.
Scrap in the Bill of Materials (BOM)
Expected scrap can be defined while creating or updating a Bill of Materials. This allows manufacturers to estimate the quantity of waste that is likely to be generated during the production process.
The estimated scrap quantity is maintained in the Scrap table of the BOM.
If required, an existing raw material item can also be selected as a scrap item. This is useful when part of a raw material is expected to become unusable or recoverable after manufacturing.
The Scrap table stores the expected quantity of scrap for each manufacturing cycle, allowing ERPNext to automatically include these items during production completion.
Scrap During Manufacturing
Once production is completed, ERPNext creates a Finish / Manufacture Entry against the corresponding Work Order or Production Order.
During this process, the system automatically fetches the scrap items defined in the BOM and includes them in the manufacturing Stock Entry.
For scrap items, only the Target Warehouse is populated, ensuring that the generated scrap is moved into the designated scrap warehouse for inventory tracking.
Valuation of Scrap Items
To ensure accurate inventory valuation and accounting entries, a Valuation Rate should be specified for each scrap item.
The valuation rate is used by ERPNext when posting accounting entries related to the manufacture transaction, allowing businesses to maintain accurate financial records for recoverable scrap materials.
Assigning an appropriate valuation rate to scrap items ensures that inventory valuation and ledger postings correctly reflect the value of recoverable waste generated during manufacturing.
Manufacturing Settings Requirement
The automatic inclusion of scrap items from the BOM depends on how the Manufacture Entry is created.
- If the Manufacture Entry is created Based on BOM, ERPNext automatically fetches the scrap items defined in the BOM.
- If the Manufacture Entry is created Based on Material Transfer, the scrap items from the BOM are not automatically included.
This behavior is controlled through the Manufacturing Settings, allowing organizations to configure the manufacturing workflow according to their production process.
Scrap defined in the BOM is considered only when the Manufacture Entry is generated based on the BOM configuration. If manufacturing follows the Material Transfer approach, the BOM scrap information is not automatically applied.
Business Benefits
- Tracks expected scrap quantities directly within the Bill of Materials.
- Automatically records scrap during manufacturing completion.
- Maintains inventory of recoverable scrap in designated scrap warehouses.
- Supports accurate accounting through scrap valuation rates.
- Improves visibility into manufacturing waste and recyclable materials.
- Provides better inventory and cost control for production operations.
Key Summary
ERPNext simplifies scrap management by allowing manufacturers to define expected scrap in the Bill of Materials and automatically record it during production completion. By storing scrap in designated warehouses and applying appropriate valuation rates, the system ensures accurate inventory tracking, accounting, and visibility into manufacturing waste and recoverable materials.
