Operation
An Operation in ERPNext represents a specific manufacturing activity performed on raw materials or semi-finished goods during the production process. Each operation defines a distinct production step, such as cutting, drilling, welding, painting, or assembly, that contributes to the manufacturing of a finished product.
The Operation master stores the details of a manufacturing operation, including its description, default workstation, and quality inspection settings. These details are automatically used in manufacturing documents such as Bills of Materials (BOMs), Work Orders, and Job Cards, ensuring consistency throughout the production process.
Prerequisites
Before creating an Operation, it is recommended to configure the required Workstation where the manufacturing activity will be performed.
Having a Workstation configured in advance allows ERPNext to automatically assign operations to the appropriate production resource during manufacturing.
System Requirement
A configured Workstation enables ERPNext to automatically populate workstation details in Bills of Materials (BOMs), Work Orders, and Job Cards, making production planning more efficient.
Creating an Operation
Follow these steps to create a new Operation:
- Navigate to the Operation list and click New.
- Enter a unique name for the operation (for example, Cutting, Welding, or Assembly).
- Select the Default Workstation where the operation will normally be performed. This workstation will automatically be fetched into Bills of Materials and Work Orders.
- Optionally, select a Quality Inspection Template in the Job Card section. When Job Cards are generated from a Work Order, this template is automatically linked to the operation. If a Quality Inspection is created from the Job Card, ERPNext uses the selected template by default.
- Add a description to explain the purpose or process involved in the operation.
- Save the Operation.
Default Workstation
The Default Workstation identifies the machine, production line, or work center where the operation is typically carried out.
Once configured, ERPNext automatically retrieves the workstation whenever the operation is used in a BOM or Work Order, reducing manual configuration and ensuring production consistency.
Quality Inspection Template
Operations can be linked with a Quality Inspection Template to support quality control during manufacturing.
- The selected template is automatically applied to Job Cards created for the operation.
- When users create a Quality Inspection from the Job Card, ERPNext automatically selects the configured inspection template.
- This helps standardize inspection procedures and ensures consistent quality checks throughout the manufacturing process.
Description
The Description field can be used to record additional information about the manufacturing operation, such as the production process, work instructions, safety guidelines, or other operational notes.
Providing clear descriptions helps production teams better understand the purpose and execution of each manufacturing step.
Documents Created from an Operation
After an Operation has been created, it becomes available for use across various manufacturing documents.
Operations can be linked with:
- Bill of Materials (BOM) – To define the manufacturing steps required to produce an item.
- Routing – To create standardized sequences of manufacturing operations.
- Work Orders – To execute manufacturing based on the defined operations.
- Job Cards – To assign and track individual production activities performed at each workstation.
- Quality Inspections – To perform quality checks during or after the operation using predefined inspection templates.
Operational Note
Defining Operations separately allows the same manufacturing activity to be reused across multiple Bills of Materials and Routings, ensuring consistency while reducing duplicate configuration.
