Workstation

A Workstation in ERPNext represents the physical location, machine, production line, or work center where manufacturing operations are performed. It stores operational details such as production costs, working hours, production capacity, and availability, helping businesses efficiently plan and schedule manufacturing activities.

Every manufacturing Operation is carried out at a Workstation. While an Operation defines what work needs to be performed, a Workstation defines where that work is performed. For example, an operation such as Melting can be carried out on multiple furnaces, each represented as a separate Workstation.

Creating a Workstation

Follow these steps to create a new Workstation:

1. Navigate to the Workstation list and click New.
2. Enter a unique name for the Workstation.
3. Under the Operating Costs section, add the cost components associated with running the workstation.
4. Optionally, enter a description to provide additional details about the workstation.
5. Save the Workstation.

Operating Costs

The Operating Costs section allows businesses to define the expenses incurred while using a workstation. These costs are used during manufacturing cost calculations and help determine the overall production cost.

Common operating cost components include:

• Electricity
• Rent
• Consumables
• Wages

By defining these costs, ERPNext can calculate more accurate manufacturing expenses for each operation performed at the workstation.

Operating Components

Operating Components allow users to break down workstation expenses into individual cost categories.

Instead of maintaining a single operating cost, businesses can separately track different production expenses such as electricity, labor, maintenance, consumables, or utilities.

This detailed cost breakdown provides better visibility into manufacturing expenses and supports more accurate product costing.

Workstation Operating Components

ERPNext also allows users to define the Expense Account for each operating component on a company-wise basis.

This ensures that different operating expenses are posted to the appropriate accounting ledger during manufacturing cost calculations.

Using separate expense accounts improves financial reporting and provides greater control over manufacturing cost allocation.

Holiday List

A Holiday List can be assigned to a Workstation to define its non-working days.

When a Holiday List is configured, ERPNext automatically excludes those dates while scheduling manufacturing operations.

This prevents Work Orders and Job Cards from being scheduled on holidays or planned shutdown days.

Working Hours

The Working Hours section defines when a Workstation is available for production.

Users can configure one or multiple working time slots for each day.

For example:

• 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
• 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Working hours can also be configured according to production shifts.

Whenever a Work Order is scheduled, ERPNext checks the workstation’s working hours and availability before assigning manufacturing operations.

Production Capacity

Production Capacity defines the maximum number of manufacturing jobs that can be processed simultaneously at a Workstation.

For example, if a workstation has a production capacity of three, ERPNext can schedule up to three manufacturing operations at the same time on that workstation.

Properly configuring production capacity helps optimize machine utilization and improves production scheduling accuracy.

After Saving the Workstation

Once a Workstation has been created, it can be linked with various manufacturing documents throughout ERPNext.

The Workstation can be used in:

• Operations
• Bill of Materials (BOM)
• Routing
• Work Orders
• Job Cards

These integrations allow ERPNext to schedule production, calculate operating costs, allocate manufacturing resources, and track production progress more efficiently.
