Asset Movement
Asset Movement is a transaction used to transfer assets between locations and/or employees (custodians). It helps organizations maintain an accurate record of where an asset is located and who is currently responsible for it.
Using Asset Movement, you can transfer assets between facilities, issue assets to employees, receive returned assets, or perform both location and custodian transfers in a single transaction.
To access the Asset Movement list, navigate to:
Home > Assets > Assets > Asset Movement
1. How to Create an Asset Movement
Follow these steps to record an asset movement:
- Go to the Asset Movement list.
- Click New.
- Select the appropriate Purpose.
- Enter the required movement details.
- Click Save and then Submit.
Asset Movement is a transaction and must be submitted before the Asset’s location or custodian is updated.

2. Movement Types
The Purpose field determines the type of movement being performed. Depending on the selected purpose, ERPNext automatically displays the relevant fields.
2.1 Transfer
Transfer moves an asset from one location to another while keeping the same custodian.
Example: Transfer a production machine from Plant A to Plant B.
2.2 Issue
Issue assigns an asset from one employee to another employee.
Example: Issue a company laptop from the Stores department to a Sales Executive.
2.3 Receipt
Receipt records the return of an asset from an employee back to a company location.
Example: Receive a laptop from an employee leaving the organization and return it to the Stores location.
2.4 Transfer and Issue
Transfer and Issue allows both the physical location and the custodian of an asset to be changed in a single transaction.
This is useful when an asset is moved to another facility and assigned to a different employee simultaneously.
3. Move Multiple Assets
ERPNext also allows multiple assets to be transferred together.
To move multiple assets:
- Open the Asset List.
- Select the required assets using the checkboxes.
- Click Actions.
- Select Make Asset Movement.
ERPNext creates a new Asset Movement document with all selected assets automatically populated.

4. Initiate Asset Movement from an Asset
You can also create an Asset Movement directly from an individual Asset record.
Open the Asset and select:
Actions → Transfer Asset
ERPNext automatically creates a new Asset Movement document with the asset details pre-filled, reducing manual data entry.

5. Benefits
Using Asset Movement helps organizations:
- Track the current location of every asset.
- Maintain complete custody records for employees.
- Record asset transfers and returns with proper audit trails.
- Transfer multiple assets in a single transaction.
